Characteristics of Automotive FPC

Automotive FPC is mainly made of polyimide (PI) substrate. It is flexible and bendable, thin and lightweight, enabling 3D assembly on curved surfaces and in narrow, irregular spaces. Compared with traditional discrete wire harnesses, it reduces the number of connectors, cuts weight, simplifies vehicle assembly processes, and lowers risks such as poor contact from loose terminals. It is widely applied in space-constrained automotive areas including BMS battery packs, curved display screens and steering wheel rotating shafts.

In terms of environmental reliability, automotive FPC is designed for harsh automotive operating conditions. Its normal operating temperature ranges from -40℃ to 125℃, and products for engine compartments can withstand even higher temperatures. It can endure repeated thermal cycling, continuous vibration and shock. It also features good resistance to humidity, salt spray, oil contamination and chemical cleaners, with flame retardancy rating UL94 V-0. Its service life matches the vehicle design requirement of 15 years / 200,000 km, far exceeding consumer-grade FPC.

For electrical performance, it supports high-density fine circuit design and can be fabricated into multi-layer circuits and rigid-flex boards. For high-speed signal requirements of automotive displays and ADAS cameras, differential impedance control is available. Shielding films can be applied to reduce electromagnetic interference, ensuring stable transmission of MIPI and automotive Ethernet signals. BMS-dedicated FPC features ultra-low contact resistance to guarantee accurate sampling of cell voltage and temperature and reduce potential heat generation risks.

Bending performance varies for static and dynamic bending scenarios. Static applications only require one-time forming to fit curved surfaces. For locations requiring repeated rotation such as steering wheel shafts and sliding central control screens, copper foil with high fatigue resistance is adopted. It can withstand hundreds of thousands of dynamic bending cycles without circuit breakage, a durability standard unachievable for ordinary consumer FPC.

In quality control, products must pass AEC-Q100 certification and comply with IPC Class3 for highest reliability. Manufacturers shall hold IATF16949 automotive quality system certification, implement automotive quality procedures such as PPAP and FMEA, realize full batch traceability and strictly control defect rates to meet high reliability requirements for automotive safety.
